Autumn in Melrose is something to be experienced with all the senses. There’s the changing colour across the Eildon Hills, the softer seasonal light, the scent of fallen leaves and that unmistakable freshness in the air.

Set in the heart of the Scottish Borders, our historic market town makes a wonderful destination for an autumn day out. Whether you arrive on foot, by bike or by car, you’ll find independent shops to explore, beautiful countryside within easy reach and plenty of reasons to stay for a while.

Step Inside and Experience Autumn

The shop has slipped beautifully into the new season...

Rich colour, natural textures and the softer autumn light have transformed our displays. Seasonal fragrance fills the shop too - often one of the first things visitors comment on as they walk through the door.

Fig, orange, rosemary and eucalyptus sit alongside glowing candles in autumnal and jewel tones, while faux foliage, weathered garden pieces and tactile natural materials bring another layer of seasonal interest.

It’s an atmosphere that can be difficult to capture fully online. Sometimes, you simply have to step inside and experience it for yourself.

Discover What’s New

Our collections are constantly evolving, and recent buying trips have brought an exciting mixture of new pieces into the shop.

Among the latest arrivals are characterful cast iron garden ornaments, statement planters, sculptural pieces and candles in rich seasonal shades. Many are unusual designs that you won’t find on every high street - and some are available in very limited numbers.

We have also launched our new Kitchen & Household collection. Inspired by the journey from garden to table, it brings together thoughtful and useful pieces including German-made wooden spoons, oak chopping and serving boards, handmade Moroccan bowls, colourful tea glasses, produce brushes and traditional household essentials.

It’s a collection designed for kitchens that are used and enjoyed, where practical pieces can still be beautiful enough to leave on display.

 

Find Something You Won’t See Everywhere

Alongside our new collections, you’ll find the vintage and pre-owned garden pieces for which Henderson’s is known.

Garden furniture, time-worn stoneware, urns, planters, statuary and decorative objects arrive individually rather than as predictable seasonal ranges. Often there is only one available, complete with its own patina, history and character.

That means no two visits feel quite the same. Pieces are constantly arriving, displays are rearranged and unexpected finds appear throughout the shop.

Don’t Miss the Other Floor

Henderson’s extends over two floors, although many visitors don’t initially realise there is more to explore downstairs.

Our basement level is filled with faux botanicals, lamps and lighting, mirrors, wall art, sculpture, hardware, decorative objects and garden furniture. It’s where some of our most unusual pieces can be found - and it’s always worth taking your time to look around.

Make a Day of It in Melrose

Once you have explored the shop, there is plenty more to discover around Melrose.

Spend some time browsing the town’s independent businesses before stopping for coffee or lunch. Then step beyond the high street and you can be surrounded by beautiful Scottish Borders countryside remarkably quickly.

The Eildon Hills provide the backdrop to the town, with woodland trails and routes for walking, trail running and cycling. Autumn is an especially beautiful time to explore them as the foliage changes and the views open across the surrounding landscape.

• Leaderfoot Viaduct, one of the area’s most striking landmarks.
• Scott’s View, with its panoramic outlook towards the Eildon Hills.
• The Wallace Monument, commemorating William Wallace.
• The Temple of the Muses, a wonderfully whimsical riverside folly near Dryburgh.
• The woodland trails surrounding Melrose, perfect for experiencing the season on foot or by bike.
