Autumn is the time to embrace flaming reds, burnt oranges and golden yellows and what better time to start than November 5th, when fires will be blazing, sparklers sparkling and fireworks filling the sky?

While it’s not entirely practical to redecorate our houses in the season’s earthy hues, we don’t mind settling for the next best thing- bringing the outdoors in. Glorious bouquets of seasonal foliage, from hedgerow foraging to picking fresh autumn flowers, herbs and greenery.

Our hedgerows and woodlands are overflowing with an assortment of seasonal foliage, often blown to the ground and there for the taking. Combine bright red rose hips (or black ones if you can find them) with some of our faux Christmas Rose stems. Vases overflowing with fresh Eucalyptus look and smell heavenly… a stray stem or two always adds an unexpected point of interest and balance so most importantly, have fun and play!

Think about scent, it’s incredible how comforting and evocative a fragrance can be– pot pourri (what I here you cry…coloured wood shavings with a pungent oil drizzled on top?) Word on the street says it’s making a come-back and we have the most heavenly winter spice pot pourri, a beautifully wrapped combination of dried fruit slices, spices and pine cones, all softly scented with a spicy warm fragrance that blends notes of sweet cinnamon and clove with a dash of fresh orange.

Scented reeds are also a great way to add a constant fragrance to a room – rosemary and eucalyptus, fig, cinnamon and clove… fragrances that are deep and rich in tone with hints of fruit and wood smoke add such a delicious warmth to a room, you’ll never want to leave!

Add some natural fibres too – like willow, hemp and wool. This is easy to do, with baskets laden with logs next to fireplaces or stoves around the house. It shouts immediate comfort. Our braided hemp place-mats dotted around tables have a wonderful organic tactile quality– again they add that outdoorsy note.

And finally, after a day in the great outdoors what better way to cosy up than in a pair of our beautiful hand knitted woollen house socks…hot toddy anyone?
