  • Bridal Blooms: Dinner Plate Dahlias

We recently brought a talented florist on board, to assist in expanding our offerings in store to include fresh cut flowers. Since Caroline joined us, we have been working closely with flower growers in Holland to bring the most fabulous and fresh array of blooms to the shop. This week, with a bridal bouquet to create, Caroline introduced us to a local grower of stunning dinner plate dahlias – magical blooms that bring images of allotment gardens and flower shows to mind.

The dinner plate dahlia deserves a round of applause for coming into season as soon as the beloved peony leaves us. These giants are a perfect large focal flower for summer weddings, coming into season in July and sticking around until October. Their blooms can be around 20cm across on average (I remember them as a child in my grandfathers garden, holding one next to my head to compare the size – they can be as big or bigger)!

Dinner plate dahlias come in various colours – the most readily available being white, a soft pink/peach and a vibrant sherbet/coppery orange. The curvy movement of the petals on these giant blooms look soft and natural in rustic wedding arrangements and add drama and glamour to more modern wedding decor.

Fantastic for use in centrepieces, you don’t need too many of them to create impact, colour and structure. Stunning also as single stems, they stand confidently alone, in a single vase, as a collection on a round table, or in a row down the centre of a long table at your wedding.

In this stunning arrangement, Caroline mixes dahlia, artichoke and garden roses, with smaller wispy accents of honeysuckle, rosemary and eucalyptus. Not only does it look amazing, this arrangement smells heavenly too!

Here, single stems in bubble glass bud vases, and a bouquet of pale pink garden roses with dahlia and honeysuckle.

We’re delighted to now be able to offer stunning bouquets, buttonholes and corsages for weddings along with fresh cut flowers, bouquets and arrangements. Pop into store and meet Caroline for some fabulous inspiration…
